Texas Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements
Everything you need to know about getting your driver license in Texas, including permit age, restrictions, curfew, and practice hours.
Step 1: Learner's Permit
Minimum Age
15 years old
Holding Period
6 months
Requirements:
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass vision screening
- Complete 32-hour driver education course
- Parent/guardian consent
- Parent must log 44 hours of supervised driving
Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License
Minimum Age
16 years old
Night Curfew
Midnight - 5:00 AM (first year)
Passenger Limit
1 non-family passenger under 18 (first year)
Restrictions:
- Must have held permit for 6 months
- No driving between midnight and 5 AM for first year
- No more than 1 non-family passenger under 18 for first year
- No electronic communication devices
Step 3: Full Driver License
Minimum Age
17 years old
Requirements:
- Must have held intermediate license for 6 months
- Complete 32-hour classroom + 44 hours supervised driving (7 at night)
- Pass road skills test

Parent-Taught Driver Education
Available
Texas offers parent-taught driver education (PTDE). Parents must purchase a state-approved PTDE course and can teach both classroom and behind-the-wheel portions.
