South Carolina Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Step 1: Learner's Permit
Minimum Age
15 years old
Holding Period
12 months
Requirements:
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass vision screening
- Parent/guardian consent
- Complete driver education course
Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License
Minimum Age
16 years old
Night Curfew
6:00 PM - 5:00 AM (unless supervised)
Passenger Limit
2 non-family passengers under 18 (first 6 months)
Restrictions:
- Must have held permit for 12 months
- No driving between 6 PM and 5 AM unless supervised by licensed adult 21+
- Only 2 non-family passengers under 18 for first 6 months
Step 3: Full Driver License
Minimum Age
17 years old
Requirements:
- Must have held intermediate license for 12 months
- Complete 40 hours of supervised driving (10 at night)
- Pass road skills test
