New Jersey Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Step 1: Learner's Permit
Minimum Age
16 years old
Holding Period
6 months
Requirements:
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass vision screening
- Complete 6-hour behind-the-wheel driver education
- Parent/guardian consent
Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License
Minimum Age
17 years old
Night Curfew
11:01 PM - 5:00 AM
Passenger Limit
1 non-family passenger
Restrictions:
- Must have held permit for 6 months
- No driving between 11:01 PM and 5 AM
- Only 1 non-family passenger unless accompanied by adult 21+ with 3+ years experience
- All passengers must wear seatbelts
Step 3: Full Driver License
Minimum Age
18 years old
Requirements:
- Must have held intermediate license for 12 months
- Complete 50 hours of supervised driving
- Pass road skills test
