Montana Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Everything you need to know about getting your driver license in Montana, including permit age, restrictions, curfew, and practice hours.

Step 1: Learner's Permit

Minimum Age

14 years 6 months years old

Holding Period

6 months

Requirements:

  • Pass written knowledge test
  • Pass vision screening
  • Complete driver education course (if under 16)
  • Parent/guardian consent

Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License

Minimum Age

15 years old

Night Curfew

11:00 PM - 5:00 AM (first year)

Passenger Limit

1 non-family passenger under 18 (first 6 months)

Restrictions:

  • Must have held permit for 6 months
  • No driving between 11 PM and 5 AM for first year
  • Only 1 non-family passenger under 18 for first 6 months

Step 3: Full Driver License

Minimum Age

16 years old

Requirements:

  • Must have held intermediate license for 12 months
  • Complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night)
  • Pass road skills test
