Maine Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements
Everything you need to know about getting your driver license in Maine, including permit age, restrictions, curfew, and practice hours.
Step 1: Learner's Permit
Minimum Age
15 years old
Holding Period
6 months
Requirements:
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass vision screening
- Complete driver education course
- Parent/guardian consent
Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License
Minimum Age
16 years old
Night Curfew
Midnight - 5:00 AM (first 6 months)
Passenger Limit
No non-family passengers (first 6 months)
Restrictions:
- Must have held permit for 6 months
- No driving between midnight and 5 AM for first 6 months
- No passengers unless accompanied by licensed adult 20+ (first 6 months, except family)
Step 3: Full Driver License
Minimum Age
17 years old
Requirements:
- Must have held intermediate license for 12 months
- Complete 70 hours of supervised driving (10 at night)
- Pass road skills test

Parent-Taught Driver Education
Not Available
Maine does not offer parent-taught driver education. Driver education must be through approved schools.
