Maryland Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Everything you need to know about getting your driver license in Maryland, including permit age, restrictions, curfew, and practice hours.

Step 1: Learner's Permit

Minimum Age

15 years 9 months years old

Holding Period

9 months

Requirements:

  • Pass written knowledge test
  • Pass vision screening
  • Complete driver education course
  • Parent/guardian consent

Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License

Minimum Age

16 years 6 months years old

Night Curfew

Midnight - 5:00 AM (first 5 months)

Passenger Limit

No passengers under 18 (first 5 months)

Restrictions:

  • Must have held permit for 9 months
  • No driving between midnight and 5 AM for first 5 months
  • No passengers under 18 (except family) for first 5 months
  • All passengers must wear seatbelts

Step 3: Full Driver License

Minimum Age

17 years 9 months years old

Requirements:

  • Must have held intermediate license for 6 months
  • Complete 60 hours of supervised driving (10 at night)
  • Pass road skills test

Parent-Taught Driver Education

Not Available

Maryland does not offer parent-taught driver education. Driver education must be through a licensed school.
