Maryland Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Step 1: Learner's Permit
Minimum Age
15 years 9 months years old
Holding Period
9 months
Requirements:
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass vision screening
- Complete driver education course
- Parent/guardian consent
Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License
Minimum Age
16 years 6 months years old
Night Curfew
Midnight - 5:00 AM (first 5 months)
Passenger Limit
No passengers under 18 (first 5 months)
Restrictions:
- Must have held permit for 9 months
- No driving between midnight and 5 AM for first 5 months
- No passengers under 18 (except family) for first 5 months
- All passengers must wear seatbelts
Step 3: Full Driver License
Minimum Age
17 years 9 months years old
Requirements:
- Must have held intermediate license for 6 months
- Complete 60 hours of supervised driving (10 at night)
- Pass road skills test

Parent-Taught Driver Education
Not Available
Maryland does not offer parent-taught driver education. Driver education must be through a licensed school.
