Indiana Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Everything you need to know about getting your driver license in Indiana, including permit age, restrictions, curfew, and practice hours.

Step 1: Learner's Permit

Minimum Age

15 years old

Holding Period

6 months

Requirements:

  • Pass written knowledge test
  • Pass vision screening
  • Enrolled in driver education (if 15)
  • Parent/guardian consent

Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License

Minimum Age

16 years 3 months years old

Night Curfew

10:00 PM - 5:00 AM (first 6 months)

Passenger Limit

No passengers unless supervised (first 6 months)

Restrictions:

  • Must have held permit for 6 months
  • No driving between 10 PM and 5 AM for first 6 months
  • No passengers unless accompanied by licensed adult 25+ (for first 6 months)

Step 3: Full Driver License

Minimum Age

17 years old

Requirements:

  • Must have held intermediate license for 6 months
  • Complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night)
  • Pass road skills test
