Georgia Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Everything you need to know about getting your driver license in Georgia, including permit age, restrictions, curfew, and practice hours.

Step 1: Learner's Permit

Minimum Age

15 years old

Holding Period

12 months

Requirements:

  • Pass written knowledge test
  • Pass vision screening
  • Enrolled in or completed driver education
  • Parent/guardian consent

Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License

Minimum Age

16 years 6 months years old

Night Curfew

Midnight - 5:00 AM

Passenger Limit

Immediate family only (first 6 months), 1 non-family (second 6 months)

Restrictions:

  • Must have held permit for 12 months
  • No driving between midnight and 5 AM
  • For first 6 months: only immediate family members
  • Second 6 months: only 1 non-family passenger under 21

Step 3: Full Driver License

Minimum Age

17 years old

Requirements:

  • Complete Joshua's Law driver education course
  • Complete 40 hours of supervised driving (6 at night)
  • Pass road skills test
