Georgia Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Step 1: Learner's Permit
Minimum Age
15 years old
Holding Period
12 months
Requirements:
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass vision screening
- Enrolled in or completed driver education
- Parent/guardian consent
Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License
Minimum Age
16 years 6 months years old
Night Curfew
Midnight - 5:00 AM
Passenger Limit
Immediate family only (first 6 months), 1 non-family (second 6 months)
Restrictions:
- Must have held permit for 12 months
- No driving between midnight and 5 AM
- For first 6 months: only immediate family members
- Second 6 months: only 1 non-family passenger under 21
Step 3: Full Driver License
Minimum Age
17 years old
Requirements:
- Complete Joshua's Law driver education course
- Complete 40 hours of supervised driving (6 at night)
- Pass road skills test
