California Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements
Everything you need to know about getting your driver license in California, including permit age, restrictions, curfew, and practice hours.
Step 1: Learner's Permit
Minimum Age
15 years 6 months years old
Holding Period
6 months
Requirements:
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass vision screening
- Enrolled in or completed driver education
- Parent/guardian signature on application
Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License
Minimum Age
16 years old
Night Curfew
11:00 PM - 5:00 AM (first 12 months)
Passenger Limit
No passengers under 20 (first 12 months)
Restrictions:
- Must have held permit for 6 months
- No driving between 11 PM and 5 AM for first 12 months
- No passengers under 20 (except family) for first 12 months unless accompanied by licensed adult 25+
Step 3: Full Driver License
Minimum Age
17 years old
Requirements:
- Must have held provisional license for 12 months
- Complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night)
- Pass road skills test
- No traffic violations for 12 months

Parent-Taught Driver Education
Available
California allows parent-taught driver education. Parents must complete a 30-hour classroom portion or use an approved online course and log 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.
