Alaska Graduated Driver License (GDL) Requirements

Step 1: Learner's Permit
Minimum Age
14 years old
Holding Period
6 months
Requirements:
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass vision screening
- Parent/guardian consent if under 18
Step 2: Intermediate/Provisional License
Minimum Age
16 years old
Night Curfew
1:00 AM - 5:00 AM
Passenger Limit
No passengers under 21 (first 6 months)
Restrictions:
- Must have held permit for 6 months
- No driving between 1 AM and 5 AM unless accompanied by licensed adult 21+
- No passengers under 21 (except family) for first 6 months
Step 3: Full Driver License
Minimum Age
16.5 years old
Requirements:
- Must have held intermediate license for 6 months
- Complete 40 hours of supervised driving
- Pass road skills test

Parent-Taught Driver Education
Not Available
Alaska does not offer a formal parent-taught driver education program. Driver education is available through commercial schools and school districts.
